Around 1990, Gunther Holtorf had just finished installing a bed and storage racks in his '88 G-Wagen. His next move was to put a personal ad in Die Zeit, and shortly after Christine responded he popped the question; "Why don't we do a little bit of travel?"

Holtorf had a bit of a thing going– he met Christine not long after returning from another off-road expedition with his third wife Beate (it didn't work out). But apparently his fourth try was a charm; the pair spent two decades together rolling through 177 countries and putting over half a million miles on "Otto;" the blue-grey Mercedes-Benz G 300 Diesel they lived together in for the entirety of their journey.

It's a spectacular story of love, loss, incredible adventure, and some excellent off-roading. Read it and see the unbelievable photo album on this BBC special:

Gunther, Christine and Otto

"How a man met a woman and they set off on an epic journey across six continents in one amazing unbreakable car"

Gunther's still on the road. You can check out what he's been up to, and where Otto has been in this slideshow and interview as well:
